Ferrania P30 captures the image I have in mind well. That of a timeless world, crystallized in its beauty but evolving. Technically speaking, P30 is a good testing ground for developers, being a film that requires careful study and that delivers great satisfaction if properly exposed and developed.

I love Film Ferrania as its looks is like an instantaneous call back to the look and feel of cinema. I choose Film Ferrania for my projects because the images I create with it gives me an immediate sense of connection. Connection to feelings. It is a connection to a memory that may not even be mine, but a liminal space. A shared, ethereal nostalgia that allows others to connect to images of strangers and invites them to feel empathy.

In addition to being a photographer, Schaub is also a filmmaker, so he has long been aware of the strong legacy of Ferrania films. “I chose Ferrania for the Scotland project because I knew the rich tonality and contrast would not only be expressive and beautiful, but because I felt the cinematic qualities would resonate with the themes I was exploring of myth, folklore and legend. “Coupled with my developer of choice, in this case Rodinol, I was able to process my film on location in very minimal circumstances (a bathroom the size of a closet) and achieve the feeling that I was going for: evocative, alluring, and a little unsettling.”

I photographed around Raleigh, NC. Being a born and raised city dweller, where it's always fast paced, Raleigh provided me a respite from it all. Granted me an opportunity to slow down and take in all the little things. See the real people and small details that make up a southern city. Being a lower speed film, Ferrania P30 handled the tones and sharpness in a way I appreciated.

I relied on Film Ferrania P30 because of it's high silver content, deep shadows and beautiful rendering of light and gradients. We live in a world where smart-phone digital photography is ubiquitous and somehow feels less-real or hyper-real whereas the emotion I get from P30 is somehow more "real" or more grounded. Thanks to the beautiful rendering, when I see an image created with P30, I somehow feel the color and vibrance of the space in spite of it being monochrome. It puts me more "there."
